Two Monumental Ironies

I. Thomas Jefferson was a very conservative politician who believed that a government’s only role was to secure the governed’s rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (and nothing beyond that). The cornerstone of Jefferson’s memorial in the nation’s capital was laid by Franklin D. Roosevelt, who presided over a disastrous expansion of the federal government which crippled any possible recovery of the USA’s economy from an economic depression.

II. The fantastic WWII memorial‘s cornerstone was laid by George W. Bush, who never fought in a war and who needlessly sent thousands of Americans to die in a fruitless war in Iraq.
