Jokes often have an element of tragedy. Life is cruel and brutal more often than it’s sweet and endearing; a hearty soul knows a good laugh.
It’s natural and right for the suffering of others to bring forth our sympathy. However, focusing on pain only prolongs it. I find the stilted silence of respectful people who realize the gravity of situations to be suffocating- laughter brings fresh air and teaches us what suffering really means.
