I remember talking to a Bank of America employee not long after the aquisition of Merrill Lynch. He said it was a senseless move which the CEO made hurriedly and unilaterally. If he was being pressured by the Financial Powers That Be, the move suddenly makes sense and takes on a frightening signifigance.
